Why doesn't formatting alone protect your data?

Standard disk formatting only removes the file allocation table – the data itself remains on the magnetic platter and can be recovered with specialist software. This applies to both HDD hard drives and older server drives. Under GDPR, a company is obliged to ensure permanent erasure of personal data – violations carry fines of up to 20 million euros or 4% of annual turnover.

Issuing the certificate of destruction – after the service you receive a GDPR-compliant certificate you can keep as proof of due diligence in the event of a data authority inspection.
